Temporary Staff
On rare occasions, departments may require short term staffing to support critical roles and responsibilities and to meet essential department needs. To ensure inclusive, fair, and consistent practice free from favoritism or biased hiring, the following definitions and steps are to be followed.
Definitions:
Temporary Staff – A temporary employee that is a 今日吃瓜 direct hire or sourced from an external staffing agency, and whose primary responsibility is to complete a project that is limited in duration, for up to six months. Compensation is determined by internal equity within similar positions. Temporary employment is part time work (no more than 29 hours/week). These positions are not benefit eligible.
Limited Duration Employee – An internal employee or external hire placed into an unbudgeted position for a limited time not to exceed 6 - 12 months. The employee takes full responsibility for the role and compensation is determined by internal equity within similar positions. Approval is required from the VP of Finance/Treasurer or, for grant-funded academic positions, by the Dean of the Faculty.
Interim Manager/Director: An internal or external employee that takes on the majority of the essential functions and responsibilities left by a vacant manager/supervisor role. Employees must meet the minimum qualifications for the vacated role; compensation is determined by internal equity within similar positions. The employee may or may not apply for the vacant manager/supervisor role. This is a limited term position, typically a minimum of 12 weeks and not to exceed 6 months.
Acting Manager/Director: An internal employee that takes on some of the essential functions and responsibilities left by a vacant manager/supervisor role. Employees do not need to meet the minimum qualifications for the vacated role; additional responsibilities are considered “other duties as assigned” and are performed in a support capacity without changes to base compensation. The employee is not eligible to apply for the vacant manager/supervisor role, unless the underlying job description changes. This is a limited term position, typically a minimum of 12 weeks and not to exceed 6 months.
